Iconic Melbourne “SW6” class Melbourne tram, built in 1948 at Preston Workshops. Allocated to Kew Depot for most of its life. 14.7 metres long, 2.73 metres wide, 3.16 metres high and weighing 17.5 tonnes. Seated 52 passengers. Currently housed outside under a good woven fibreglass “tarp”. The tram is missing a section of the timber roof drip-rail, one lifeguard tray has been cut off (and is inside the tram) and both drop-centre footboards are badly “weathered”. The tram’s roof is in very good condition, being coated with “Emerclad”. That coating was just painted over the somewhat srough surface of the old painted canvas. The exterior green and cream livery is in faded condition with some filled sections of panels de-laminating. The tram’s headlights are still in-situ, as are the two trolley bases and poles, as well as the two route number boxes. The interior is intact, with a complete set of brown vinyl-covered seats in quite good condition. The standee passenger strap hangers, bell cords and buzzers are intact. The four drop-centre doors are of the later aluminium type. The driver’s cabins are intact. The tram sits on two No. 15 trucks but with very little “tread” remaining. It is understood that the tram is functionally complete and operable. |
